  • Tywin Lannister. He was the Lord of Casterly Rock and the father of Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion. He led the Lannister army during the War of the Five Kings and became Hand of the King after the Battle of Blackwater, in which Stannis Baratheon’s army was defeated thanks to him. Tywin was in control of King’s Landing and the Seven Kingdom during both Joffrey and Tommen Baratheon’s reigns. In Season 4, he sentenced Tyrion to death when he was found guilty of murdering Joffrey Baratheon at his wedding. Tyrion, who managed to escape helped by Jaime, murdered Tywin with a crossbow in revenge.

The main members of House Targaryen who appear on the show are:

  • Aerys II Targaryen. He was the last Targaryen seated in the Iron Throne. However, he was called “the Mad King” as he succumbed to madness because of a long incestuous lineage. He did not have much influence on dragons anymore and he ruled with tyranny. These are the reasons why a revolution started which led to a Civil War that ended with the murder of Aerys by Jaimie Lannister and the beginning of Robert Baratheon’s reign. He had three children: Rhaegar, Viserys and Daenerys.

King Robert Baratheon named him Hand of the King during his reign and, before he died, Lord Regent of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm before for Joffrey I. However his duty towards the realm did not last long, as King Joffrey Baratheon had him executed at the end of Season 1 under a false charge of treason, because Ned refused to swear his allegiance to Joffrey. Ned was sure that Joffrey was not the rightful heir to the throne, as he was not son of Robert but of Cersei and her brother Jaime Lannister.
